...To convince my wife I need to buy another project car.
Long story short, a Volvo wagon very much like the one pictured showed up on my local Craigslist. It is listed in non-running condition and has been sitting for the past two years.
The guy says he hasn't touched it to try and start it and just wants it gone. So, it could be as simple as a dead battery or as complicated as bad head gasket, clogged fuel system, etc.. He wants $400 for it.
Worst case, the car can't be saved I nab a bunch of parts for my ol' brick, and part out the rest to break even or turn a slight profit. Best case...flush fluids and fresh battery and I have a running Volvo for ~$500 to either keep or sell.
Here's the issue....I already have 2 project '98 Dakotas, a '93 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon project/DD and a '94 Accord DD. My wife is already hassling me to consolidate vehicles, so how do I convince her instead of getting rid of a project I need an addition to my fleet? Oppos sound off!

You know, "project car" usually denotes some sort of fun or "enthusiast" type setup. 2 non running dakotas, a non-running Volvo and a rusted out 20 year old accord is more "White trash household the neighbors call the city on".

Tell her you need it for profit. I bought my Volvo 740 for $475 and got more than that when I scrapped it. Grab your parts, part out the valuables and scrap the rest. The MAF should be good for $100 easy.

I'm planning on getting rid of one of the Dakotas very soon. I am finishing up a few last things that need attention before listing it for sale. The other one I will not part with.

Good point. I may try to go that route, and she what she says.

that doesn't always work. I've gone as far as promising a new puppy but still don't have my project car :(

Ya know, I was trying to think of something witty or a good come-back, but I can't.
Well played. ;)

Yeah, my 740 was a money pit but it was a cheap money pit and I knew when to get out.

haha, good point, but that sorta raises the price of the car to the price of the car AND the cost of whatever she wants. Then again, happy wife, happy life, right?

I hear you dude. There is a 740iL for sale near me for only $2500. Says the trans is slipping. I am pretty sure a flush and filter will fix it. But I don't dare ask the wife. Godspeed young man!

if you could do it in a way that she doesn;t even know, you could ebay thy parts and pocket money for autocross upgrades.
i wanted a pantry and my wife didn't (well she did she just didn;t want me to do the work) she went out shopping with her mom one day and came back to a giant hole int he wall. well what do you want now? this or a pantry.
there was a wall with a doorway you would walk thru to get into the kitchen (which was/is the room in back) I managed to get the wall down and the two side walls stripped of plaster and swept up before she came home. hilarity ensued. I put up a new ceiling in that section and build all the cabinets from scratch along with matching doors across for the closet and basement stairway.
